Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey was born in Barcelona, Spain, and moved to southwestern France at the age of five after her parents’ divorce. She was raised in a small town near La Rochelle. Although she enjoyed acting in school plays, she initially did not consider it a viable career path. At 17, she moved to Paris to pursue a career in osteopathy. However, following the death of her father at age 46, she realized the brevity of life and decided to pursue her true ambition of acting, subsequently enrolling in drama school.
She made her acting debut on French television in 2007. Her feature film debut came in 2008 with The Sea Wall. She gained significant international recognition with her English-language debut in 2011, starring as the mermaid Syrena in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. For this role, she had to learn English. She also appeared as Sofi in the English-speaking film I Origins (2014) and as The Mage in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017).
Beyond her acting career, Bergès-Frisbey also works as a model, fronting campaigns for French Connection and serving as a brand ambassador for Chanel. She is fluent in Catalan, Spanish, French, and Italian. She received the Prix Suzanne Bianchetti in 2009 and the Trophée Chopard Award for Female Revelation of the Year at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. She also earned a nomination for the David di Donatello for Best Actress for her role in the Italian film Alaska (2015).
