Biography and What Famous For:
Daddy Yankee began his music career in the early 1990s, recording on the underground mixtape compilations of DJ Playero, which were foundational to the development of the sound that would become reggaeton. He is credited with first using the word “reggaeton” on a mixtape in 1994 to describe the new hybrid genre emerging from San Juan.
He is most famous for single-handedly launching reggaeton into a global phenomenon with his 2004 album Barrio Fino and its groundbreaking lead single, “Gasolina.” The song’s infectious beat and universal appeal shattered records, becoming the first reggaeton song to be nominated for a Latin Grammy for Record of the Year and charting across the world. “Gasolina” is widely considered the song that opened the door for Spanish-language urban music on a global scale.
Following this massive success, Daddy Yankee became the face of the genre, consistently releasing hits for over a decade, including “Lo Que Pasó, Pasó,” “Rompe,” and “Limbo.” He proved his longevity and cemented his status as a global music icon in 2017 with his collaboration on “Despacito” with Luis Fonsi. The song became one of the most successful singles of all time, topping charts in nearly 50 countries and becoming the first primarily Spanish-language song to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1996. Its music video was the most-viewed video on YouTube for several years.
Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his business acumen, founding his record label El Cartel Records and securing major endorsement deals. In 2022, he announced his retirement, embarking on a final world tour (“La Última Vuelta”) and releasing his farewell album, Legendaddy. At his final concert in Puerto Rico in December 2023, he movingly announced that his life and purpose were now dedicated to his Christian faith.
