Name: Sharqiya Sands (formerly Wahiba Sands; Arabic: رِمَال وَهِيْبَة, Rimāl Wahībah)
Address: Divided between the northern and southern governorates in the Eastern Region of Oman. It covers an area of approximately 12,500 square kilometers (4,800 sq mi), stretching about 180 km (110 mi) north to south and 80 km (50 mi) east to west.

How to Get There

Wahiba Sands is a popular and accessible desert destination, often visited as a day trip or an overnight stay from Muscat or Sur.

By Car: The most convenient way to reach the desert is by car. The entry points to the desert are typically near the towns of Al Wasil or Bidiyah. While the roads to these towns are paved, driving into the dunes requires a 4×4 vehicle. If you don’t have a 4×4, most desert camps offer a pickup service from a designated meeting point in Al Wasil or Bidiyah.
Organized Tours: Many tour operators in Oman offer full-day or overnight tours to Wahiba Sands from Muscat, often combining it with visits to nearby wadis like Wadi Bani Khalid. These tours usually include transportation, dune bashing, and sometimes cultural experiences.
On-Site: Once at the desert camps, activities like dune bashing, camel riding, and stargazing are common. It’s highly recommended to stay overnight to experience the spectacular sunrise and sunset over the dunes. The best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to March.
